What is engine is air-locked?
While working in the agricultural field, it is common to encounter issue related to airlock in tractors. It occurs when air somehow enters the fuel system of the farm tractor, resulting in the interruption of fuel supply and, consequently, engine shutdown. This scenario is called ‘engine is air-locked.’ So, it is very important for tractor owner to first remove this air from the fuel system before restarting the tractor for agricultural tasks.
Ever had your Massey Ferguson tractor abruptly halt due to this air lock in the fuel system? Fear not, below are the step-by-step procedure on how to handle this complexity like a seasoned pro.
What causes an air lock on a diesel engine?
The causes of an air lock in a diesel engine vary according to the conditions. Our Quality Assurance Team at AgroAsia Tractors has identified four major reasons for air lock issue in Massey Ferguson tractors.
- Empty Diesel Tank:
Always ensure your diesel tank is not just filled but has a comfortable reserve. Running low is a recipe for an air lock disaster that can bring your Massey tractor to an abrupt standstill. - Diesel Stop-Cock Dilemma:
Take a moment to inspect that diesel stop-cock – it should be wide open for a smooth, uninterrupted flow of fuel. - Choked or Closed Fuel Filters:
Keep a watchful eye on your fuel filters. A clogged filter can spell trouble, causing an unwelcome air lock. Regular checks and maintenance can save you from this frustrating headache. - Loose Connections:
Don’t underestimate the importance of secure connections. Tighten up any loose fuel pipes, nuts, and bolts in your system. Loose connections are an open invitation for unwanted air, potentially leading to unexpected stalls.
Diesel Air Lock Removal: Step-by-Step Guide for Tractor Owners
- Ensuring Secure Fuel System Connections: Tractors owners must ensure that all pipes and nuts in the fuel system are securely tightened.
- Initiating Smooth Diesel Flow: Begin by opening the upper Vent Plug of the primary fuel filter, pumping the fuel lift lever to initiate the smooth flow of airless diesel. Once achieved, promptly close the Vent Plug.
- Optimizing Fuel Injection Pump: Next, loosen the two screws on the fuel injection pump and continually move the priming lever until diesel flows out without any air bubbles. Tighten the lower screw first, followed by the upper one.
- High-Pressure Pump Adjustment: Begin by loosening the high-pressure pump of the cylinder’s automizer.
- Fine-Tuning High-Pressure Performance: Start the tractor with the key, and as the engine sound becomes clearer and stable, proceed to tighten the high-pressure pipe for optimal performance.
